“God doesn’t care . . .” I whispered, my voice cracked with emotion. With my elbows resting on my knees, I leaned forward and hid my face in the palms of my hands.

“That’s not true,” my mother replied, without a hint of condemnation in her voice.

“But he’s not listening!” I argued.

“That’s also not true,” my mother repeated, as gently as before. “He sees everything.”

“Then why isn’t he answering?”
