This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

My Ukranian name given at birth is Iryna, meaning "peace".

My American name given to me upon adoption at 2 years old is Abigail, meaning "my father's joy".

Ironically, the house I was born into was not one of peace, and my adoptive father committed serious crimes against me.

I am considering what to do with my name, and how to make it mean something for me today.

But what matters most is I have been adopted into the family of God.

I'm so touched that it resonated with you, Iryna!

I am so, so sorry about the suffering you endured at the hands of your adoptive father. Regardless of how any man has treated you in the past, you are the joy and delight of your Heavenly Father.

"The Lord your God is with you,

the Mighty Warrior who saves.

He will take great delight in you;

in his love he will no longer rebuke you,

but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zeph. 3:17)

May the Lord help you to find new meaning in your name. You are precious in his sight, and he loves you deeply.

This was really powerful. The honesty and vulnerability in your words hit deep.

It’s amazing how healing can shift the way we see ourselves, and your story is such a reminder of that.

I love how you tied it back to Proverbs 31:30—so much truth in that. Do you ever look back and realize how far you’ve come? Really appreciate you sharing this!

Thank you for those kind words, Jonathan!

Yes, I often look back and think about how far I've come, especially in the last few years. God knows I still have a long way yet to go, but I am so comforted by his love for me that I'm not afraid of the growth yet to come, even if it's painful.

God calls himself Father and adopts us as his very own children, chooses us in love, and joins us to his family, all because we are beloved. My father story is similar to yours, which has made the extravagant love of Jesus all the more meaningful and precious. Thank you for sharing your story, Allana.
